Flower Highlight: An Ode to Orchids

Flower Highlight: An Ode to Orchids

Orchids, Orchidaceae have become one of the most popular houseplants due to their undeniable beauty and variety. The orchid family is one of the two largest flower plant families in the world (over 28,000 species within 763 genera). Even the vanilla plant belongs to this family!

If you’re planning to add an orchid to your home, consider these popular types:

  • Cattleya (“corsage”) – deemed the classic orchid with ruffled petals and a sweet fragrance
  • Dendrobium (“many faces”) – often white, needs a lot of sunlight and grows best when potted
  • Cymbidium (“buttonhole”) – intricate bloom that prefers cooler temperatures and makes the perfect outdoor plant
  • Phaelanopsis (“moth”) – recommended for beginners as it is easy to tend to and grows quickly

Orchids make wonderful potted plants and can last up to 6-8 weeks in the right conditions. They are also often sought-after as cut stems in bridal bouquets, centerpieces, and as floral accents. These stems can last up to 4-6 weeks, an impressive time for any cut floral.

With their exotic look and thousands of varietals to choose from, it’s no wonder these highly coveted long-stemmed delicate blooms are the top choice for many people. They bring grace, sweetness, and elegance into any home.
